The chances of you picking up a weight and looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger are extremely slim, yet so many of you shy away from strength training in fear that it will make you look bulky! Strength training is the golden ticket to losing fat and altering your body composition! Which means enhancing your figure and slimming down. I’ve worked with hundreds of women who have come to me with all different goals but the one thing that i constantly hear is “i don’t want to get bulky” “i don’t want to look like a man” “ i don’t want to get bigger”

Now i’m here to debunk this idea that hitting the gym and lifting weights will create this “big bulky” look that we as women fear. In fact weight and resistance training is one of the BEST ways to get composition altering results which means its the fastest way to change your body’s size and shape without spending hours doing cardio, and attending countless classes. Not only is strength training super effective for achieving the look that you want it is also extremely important for balancing hormones, increasing bone density as well as boosting your confidence outside of your training routine! Here are the reasons that ALL women should be strength training and incorporating weights into their routine.

It will Help Balance Hormones: Have you ever felt like your hormones are imbalanced? You’re over tired, moody, too hungry or not hungry at all? Well, yeah! You’re a woman and that’s what how we fucking roll. Strength training can significantly alter your hormones and reduce a lot of stress by allowing your body to be more productive which creates need for different types of chemicals that can counteract any overactive hormones. Building strength while exercising has a powerful effect on balancing, suppressing and increasing these hormones. Excess estrogen, insulin and cortisol are the hormones responsible for weight gain, while HGH, testosterone and progesterone are the ones responsible for keeping us lean and losing fat. Insulin is made by the pancreas on the arrival of glucose into the bloodstream, it rises and falls according to what you eat, but increases particularly with processed carbohydrates and sugary foods. If there's too much insulin in your system, your body will store fat, and much of it will present itself on your hips, thighs and belly. The more weight you gain, the more insulin your body pumps out, creating a vicious cycle that can seem almost impossible to break.

You Will Lose Body Fat: Studies performed by Wayne Westcott, Ph.D., from the South Shore YMCA in Quincy, Massachusetts, found that the average woman who strength trains two to three times a week for two months will gain nearly two pounds of muscle and will lose 3.5 pounds of fat. As your lean muscle increases, so does your resting metabolism, allowing you to burn more calories throughout the day.

You Will Gain Strength Without Bulk: Oh yes, Women typically don't develop big muscles from strength training, because compared to men, women have 10 to 30 times less of the hormones that cause muscle hypertrophy. Your muscles have to be exposed to a very controlled routine that promotes gaining mass which typically includes being in a calorie surplus as well as constant muscle isolation training with heavy weights, multiple times per week. If you’re routine is not targeted towards building muscle mass, you won’t get bulky, Weight training does not make you bulky; excess body fat does, so

You Will Improve Your Attitude and Fight Depression:  Get this! Strength training actually decreases depression! This is because the act of exercise produces mood-improving neurotransmitters such as endorphins, dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. These chemicals are created and released in your body typically during muscle repair post weight lifting or other resistance exercises. In fact women who strength train commonly report feeling more confident and capable as a result of their program, all important factors in fighting depression. Majority of my clients not only build confidence through the results they get from a program made for them that works WITH their bodies, but confidence in themselves as strong capable individuals.
