Don't Let Gym Anxiety Get in the Way of Your Goals

Does anyone remember high school? Do you remember how awkward and out of place you felt when you had no idea where your classes were or what the fuck you were doing? I do!

But what ended up happening? … You went to school every day, learned where your classes were and what to do, maybe even made a few friends along the way. As you get older, it’s easier to control the situations you expose yourself to. The gym is one of those places that can be very intimidating and can even turn people off to the whole idea of working out.

DON’T GIVE IN. If you’re someone who is struggling with anxiety about the gym, check out these little tips.

Start small
You don’t have to stroll in and head straight for the heaviest weight or go for the fanciest, newest core move that you found on Instagram earlier that day. Be patient, keep it simple and KEEP GOING!! There’s countless studies on the exposure effect, meaning if you keep exposing yourself to the same situation your uncertainty about it will fade . Just like how your body will always learn to overcome the stress it’s placed under during exercise! YES, YOUR BODY IS ACTUALLY DESIGNED TO OVERCOME STRESS.

Have a Plan

Focus

Focus on what you’re doing, not results. Most anxiety is based off of uncertainty. No one walked into the gym on their first day with a six pack and perfect form and knew exactly what the hell they were doing…NO ONE.

Don’t expect something that physically just can’t happen without practice and consistency. You will see results based off of how well you follow your exercise and nutrition program, so stay focused on the small steps towards being confident in what you’re doing and you will be freaking unstoppable!
